Frieze announced Wednesday that Frieze House Seoul, its new dwelling-turned-exhibition venue in Yaksu-dong, Jung District, will open its inaugural show on Sept. 2.
The space, designed to host year-round exhibitions spanning installation, painting, photography and video, marks Frieze’s latest expansion in Korea as it prepares for Frieze Seoul 2025, which will bring more than 120 global galleries to Coex.
For its debut, the venue will present UnHouse, curated by Kim Jae-seok, an art columnist, curator and gallerist. The show examines the domestic sphere through a queer perspective, highlighting the paradox of home as both sanctuary and site of oppression.
“The home is commonly regarded as a symbol of safety, protection and intimacy, yet for queer subjects it is an ambivalent space,” Frieze said in a press release. It can function as “oppressive while at the same time, a refuge and a private laboratory to explore their desires.”
UnHouse brings together 14 artists, including Joeun Kim Aatchim, Haneyl Choi, Dew Kim, Anne Imhof, Rebecca Ness, Catherine Opie and Xiyadie.
Andy St. Louis, a Korea-based curator and journalist, has been appointed director of Frieze House Seoul and will oversee programming at the new venue.
The exhibition runs through Oct. 2. Regular hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. During the Frieze Seoul fair, from Sept. 3 to 6, the space will extend its hours to 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
