Mann explained that the decision to include anxiety stemmed from its relevance to teenagers, with studies indicating its rising prevalence among this demographic. The sequel focuses on a teenage character named Riley, whose "mind headquarters" undergoes changes to accommodate new emotions that emerge during puberty.
Nielsen emphasized the importance of authenticity in portraying teenagers' emotions, consulting experts such as professors at UC Berkeley and psychologists for insight.
