A groundbreaking public furniture installation called 'Reaction Field' has been unveiled in Seoul, South Korea, representing a bold spatial experiment that explores new pattern formations in urban public spaces. Created by Yong Ju Lee Architecture, this large-scale installation is situated in an urban rooftop garden and features a distinctive curvilinear structure that radiates and branches from its central core, covering an area of 380 square meters.
The innovative design centers around a circular canopy that serves as a focal point, emphasizing centrality while creating a dynamic visual anchor for the entire installation. From this central hub, diverging curves extend outward in a systematic pattern, following controlled design rules that create an organic yet structured appearance. The installation demonstrates how contemporary architecture can transform underutilized urban spaces into engaging community gathering areas.
Completed in 2024, the project represents a collaborative effort by a talented design team including Seonwoo Lee, Seongmin Hong, and Dachan Oh, working under the direction of Yong Ju Lee Architecture. The installation challenges traditional concepts of public furniture by creating a multifunctional space that can accommodate various activities and interactions among users.
The 'Reaction Field' installation exemplifies how modern urban design can integrate artistic expression with practical functionality. The curvilinear structure not only provides shelter and seating areas but also creates a unique spatial experience that encourages social interaction and community engagement. The radiating pattern of the design allows for multiple configurations of use, making it adaptable to different group sizes and activities.
This project highlights the growing trend of transforming urban rooftops into valuable public spaces, particularly in dense metropolitan areas like Seoul where ground-level space is at a premium. The installation serves as a model for how architects can create meaningful public interventions that enhance the urban experience while providing essential community infrastructure.
