Solbi's Resilience Against Cyberbullying Explored in Voice of America Documentary

Singer and Painter Shares Courageous Journey in "Painting Through Pain"

Renowned singer and painter Solbi takes center stage in the Voice of America's 52 Documentary series with an episode titled "Painting Through Pain." Directed by Komeil Soheili, the documentary delves into Solbi's experience with malicious comments and cyberbullying, showcasing her journey of overcoming adversity.

Part of the weekly documentary series released by VOA, the documentary was proposed by Iranian filmmaker Soheili, based in Seoul. Impressed by Solbi's artistry and her efforts to transform pain into art while addressing the issue of cyberbullying, Soheili initiated the project.

Solbi, who debuted as the main vocalist of the dance hip-hop trio Typhoon in 2006, reveals in the documentary the challenges she faced, including malicious comments attacking her appearance and artistic endeavors, alongside instances of sexual harassment. The documentary sheds light on how Solbi utilized art as a means of healing and advocates against cyberbullying.

"The scary thing about hateful comments is, they make me blame myself," Solbi shares in the film.

Soheili commends Solbi as "one of the first people to confront global problems of malicious comments rather than staying a victim," as stated by Solbi's agency, M.A.P Crew. Soheili appreciates Solbi's dedication to using art as a medium to address the issue, noting her commitment from their initial meeting.

Solbi's artworks, reflecting her unique style, will be featured in the Year-end Young Artist Exhibition at Gallery Banditrazos in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, running from Saturday to January 3, 2024.
