Singer's Critique Draws Mixed Reactions During Farewell Tour Concert

During the first concert of his national farewell tour, renowned singer Na Hoon-a, commonly known as the "trot emperor," ignited intense online discussions with critical remarks about North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

At the "2024 Thank You - Last Concert" tour on April 27 at the Songdo Convensia in Incheon, Na, 77, took the stage to express his views. He denounced North Korea, stating, "I do not consider the North a country. It's just a strange group, not a nation," and made derogatory remarks about Kim Jong-un's leadership, accusing him of neglecting his people's well-being.

Na's comments also emphasized the importance of South Korea's strength in ensuring peace on the peninsula. He asserted, "We need to become strong enough that even if [North Korea] wants to hit us, they can’t. There is peace only with power," which received applause from the audience.

In addition to his remarks on North Korea, Na made various political statements during his performance, reflecting on South Korea's political landscape and expressing frustration with politicians.

Reactions to Na's comments were polarized, with some fans praising his candidness and courage, while others criticized his decision to address political topics during a concert.

Na has a history of criticizing the North Korean leader, having declined participation in a Pyongyang Art Troupe Performance in 2018 and publicly condemning Kim's actions in subsequent performances.
