In a highly contested north London derby at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Son Heung-min scored his 16th goal of the 2023-24 season on Sunday, albeit in a losing effort as Tottenham Hotspur fell 3-2 to Arsenal.

Son's goal came in the 87th minute from a penalty kick after a foul on Ben Davies, bringing the score to 3-2. However, Tottenham was unable to find an equalizer in stoppage time.

Tottenham faced an early setback in the first half as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg inadvertently headed a Bukayo Saka corner into his own net in the 15th minute. Saka extended Arsenal's lead with a goal of his own just 10 minutes later, capitalizing on a quick counterattack. Kai Havertz added Arsenal's third goal in the 38th minute, leaving Tottenham trailing 3-0 at halftime.

Tottenham managed to narrow the gap in the second half, with Cristian Romero scoring their first goal in the 64th minute after intercepting a pass from Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. Son's penalty kick in the 87th minute brought the score to 3-2, but Arsenal held on for the win.

Despite the loss, Tottenham remains in fifth place in the Premier League, trailing Aston Villa by seven points but with two games in hand. Securing a top-four finish is crucial for a spot in the UEFA Champions League.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou expressed disappointment with the outcome of the match, acknowledging the significance of the derby for the club and its fans.

Captain Son Heung-min had a relatively quiet performance, contributing a few chances in the first half before being shifted to the wing in the second half. Richarlison replaced Son in the middle but struggled to make an impact on the game.

Tottenham will face Chelsea on the road on Thursday, followed by a match against Liverpool next weekend. They will then host Burnley on May 11 before facing league leaders Manchester City on May 14 and concluding the season against Sheffield United on May 19.
