Indonesian artist Ichwan Noor has created a remarkable piece of automotive art by transforming the iconic Volkswagen Beetle into a spherical sculpture that challenges traditional perceptions of transportation objects. The Yogyakarta-based artist, who is renowned for morphing large objects into captivating works of art, has successfully turned the beloved car into a masterpiece that bridges the gap between automotive design and contemporary sculpture.
The creation process involved meticulous craftsmanship and innovative techniques. In 2015, Noor carefully crafted a replica of the Beetle's body using polyurethane material, ensuring that no actual Volkswagen Beetles were damaged in the making of this artistic endeavor. The polyurethane form was then cast in aluminum to create the base structure, and authentic car parts were subsequently incorporated into the sculpture to maintain its automotive authenticity while achieving the desired spherical transformation.
Noor's inspiration for this unique project stemmed from his fascination with how people perceive objects within transportation culture. The artist explained his creative vision, stating, "To behold a vehicle is to have a magical identity. By combining the techniques of manipulation and substitution, the form of this sculpture tends toward realistic distortion, which allows new interpretations about the object [car], as a shift in perception that creates an associative meaning." The Beetle Series sculptures gained international recognition when they were displayed at the prestigious National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne, Australia.
