World leaders attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit will be served a specially selected citrus-flavored Korean traditional rice wine during the official welcome dinner, according to an announcement from South Korea's presidential office on Friday. The unique beverage represents a carefully chosen cultural showcase for the high-profile international gathering.

The distinguished guests will raise their glasses in a toast using makgeolli, Korea's traditional unfiltered rice wine, which has been specially infused with yuja, commonly known as citron. This particular variety is produced by Baedoga Brewery and was specifically selected to represent Korean culinary heritage at the prestigious diplomatic event.

The selection process for this cultural ambassador was highly competitive and thorough. The citrus-flavored makgeolli earned its place at the APEC table by winning first place in the "unfiltered makgeolli category" during a specialized competition organized by South Korea's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in September. The contest was specifically designed to choose the most suitable Korean rice wine to be served at the APEC welcome dinner, ensuring that only the highest quality product would represent the nation's brewing traditions.

The welcome dinner will host an impressive array of global dignitaries and senior officials from all 21 APEC member economies. Among the notable attendees will be South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, along with other world leaders and their top delegates. This gathering represents one of the most significant diplomatic events of the year, bringing together leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region to discuss economic cooperation and regional challenges.

The choice to serve makgeolli at such a high-level international event reflects South Korea's commitment to promoting its traditional culture and artisanal food products on the global stage. Makgeolli, with its creamy texture and slightly sweet taste, offers international guests an authentic taste of Korean heritage while the citrus infusion adds a refined twist that appeals to diverse palates.
