Kosloff Architecture has been awarded the 2025 National Commendation for Educational Architecture for their transformative work at Pascoe Vale Primary School in Victoria, Australia. The recognition honors a decade-long collaboration that has produced a collection of exceptional projects responding thoughtfully to the school's heritage context and the evolving social infrastructure of the surrounding community.
The comprehensive development included new classrooms, adaptive reuse of staff spaces, a STEAM facility, and a gymnasium, all delivered within extremely tight budget constraints. The projects were driven by the dedication and vision of the school's long-term principal, who championed the transformation despite financial limitations. The architectural approach emphasized material authenticity and sense of place while removing physical barriers, respecting historical elements, and further integrating the school into its broader community.
A cornerstone of the project was the extensive consultation with Traditional Custodians throughout all stages of development, ensuring meaningful incorporation of Indigenous knowledge systems into the architectural fabric itself. The masterplan weaves together lyrical First Nations stories, creating a comprehensive learning landscape developed in collaboration with GLAS Landscape Architects, local Elders, and the school's students. This collaborative approach resulted in an educational environment that honors the cultural heritage of Wurundjeri Country, where Pascoe Vale Primary School is located.
The project team included multiple specialists working in coordination with Kosloff Architecture. Builders Alchemy Construct and 2 Construct handled construction, while GLAS Landscape Architects served as landscape consultants. Artist Kent Morris and Agency of Sculpture contributed creative elements, with structural engineering provided by Wood and Grieve Engineers and Matter Consulting. Additional consultants included Lucid Consulting Australia for services, Resonate Consultants for acoustics, Philip Chun as building surveyor, and Studio Semaphore for wayfinding and signage design.
The jury citation praised how the various projects collectively demonstrate respect for heritage while embracing innovation in educational design. The award was published online on November 6, 2025, as part of the 2025 National Architecture Awards, with photography by Derek Swalwell showcasing the completed transformation.
