Tom Saltsman, an architect from Marblehead, Massachusetts, has once again showcased his creative talents by transforming his home garage into an extraordinary Halloween display. Saltsman's inspiration for the giant hermit crab stems from his childhood fascination with marine life. "When I was a kid, I loved the tide pools and hermit crabs in particular," Saltsman explained. "I thought this would be a good year to do a giant hermit crab." His passion for these small ocean creatures motivated him to create a larger-than-life tribute that brings his childhood memories to the present.
The architect's diverse skill set proved invaluable in bringing this ambitious project to life. "I have a background in theater arts and I am an architect and a builder – this is right in our wheelhouse," Saltsman said. He utilized his expertise to transform ordinary materials like plywood and Styrofoam into the impressive marine creature. His approach to sourcing materials demonstrates his resourcefulness and commitment to sustainability. "I do dig around for some materials so I can make this out of lots of found pieces and parts," he noted.

"It is an exploration of making things and seeing if you can bring your ideas to life," he explained. This mindset has driven him to push the boundaries of what's possible with each annual installation, constantly challenging himself to create something new and exciting.
