Architectural renderings have been released for a new four-story athletic and physical education facility planned for 2801-2835 Geary Boulevard in San Francisco's Lone Mountain neighborhood. The proposed facility will serve K-12 students at the Schools of the Sacred Heart, San Francisco, replacing the existing sixty-year-old Family Billiards pool hall that currently occupies the site.
The impressive 63-foot-tall structure is designed to encompass approximately 65,370 square feet of space and will include parking accommodations for 17 vehicles and 20 bicycles. The building's basement level will house a large lap pool complete with bleacher seating and an innovative open ceiling cutout connecting to the first floor, allowing students and visitors to view the pool area from the ground-level lobby entrance and student lounges above.
The facility's second floor will feature a full gymnasium equipped with a basketball court and spectator bleachers, while the third floor will contain both a performance studio and meditation studio for students. The building will be crowned with a rooftop field large enough to accommodate a regulation soccer field, providing valuable outdoor recreational space in the urban environment.
TEF serves as the project architect, collaborating with landscape architecture firm Groundworks Office on the comprehensive design. The architectural illustrations reveal that the complex will be wrapped in modern curtain-wall glass complemented by vertically formed metal panels, creating a contemporary aesthetic. The rooftop soccer field will be safely enclosed by a painted chain-link fence and protective netting featuring a curved top design.
The Schools of the Sacred Heart, San Francisco represents a unique partnership between two gender-specific K-12 Catholic educational institutions: the Convent of the Sacred Heart High School, which was originally founded in 1887, and Stuart Hall High School, established more recently in 2000. This collaboration allows both schools to share state-of-the-art athletic facilities while maintaining their individual educational identities.
According to public records, the property was most recently sold in July of last year, though the specific purchase price has not been disclosed. The development application indicates that construction costs are projected to reach approximately $50 million, a figure that does not include all associated development expenses such as permits, design fees, and other related costs. The substantial investment reflects the schools' commitment to providing world-class athletic and physical education facilities for their students.
