Two magnificent historic residences located on Quai Palissy in Saintes, France, are currently for sale, offering a rare glimpse into the architectural heritage of the region. One property features an incredibly detailed sculptural facade that has captivated passersby for over a century, while its neighbor still breathes with the creative spirit once brought to life by Michel Lis, known as "Michel the gardener."

The first property, dubbed "the sculptural house" by the Heritage Department, stands out dramatically along the quay with its ornate facade that rises above its neighbors. The building resembles delicate lacework set against a rustic backdrop, catching the eye of countless motorists crossing the Avenue de Saintonge and those glimpsing it from the bridge over the Charente River. For years, drivers have wondered about the history behind this striking architectural masterpiece they admire in passing.

The mystery behind the elaborate facade was solved through historical research conducted by the Heritage Department. They discovered an excerpt from "L'Indépendant de la Charente-Inférieure" newspaper dated March 13, 1862, which revealed the story behind the remarkable building. The article stated: "Mr. Alexandre Dumas the younger, a masonry contractor in Saintes, has just built a house on his own land at Quai Palissy, whose entire facade is covered with sculptures, foliage, birds and various ornaments ad infinitum. While one may criticize the profusion of details, one must at least recognize that they are thoroughly researched and executed with talent."

Every detail of the sculptural facade demonstrates meticulous craftsmanship, with carefully carved figures adorning each contour. Even the most functional elements receive artistic treatment – the window shutter levers are sculpted in the shape of bearded heads. The level of attention to detail extends to every aspect of the building's exterior, making it a true work of architectural art that continues to draw photographers and admirers today.

Sandrine Herboux, a real estate advisor from IAD agency handling the sale, provided insights into the property's recent history. "The Fievez family is very proud of the house. They acquired it in 1974. The gentleman has passed away and it was too big for his wife, who moved closer to her daughter in the South," Herboux explained. The family purchased the property through a candle auction in 1974, and they have proudly displayed the original auction poster in their kitchen as a memento of their acquisition.

The interior of the sculptural house has been preserved in its original state, maintaining the authentic character of the period. A spacious living room flows into a small veranda, while the kitchen displays the framed poster from the candle auction where the house was purchased decades ago. A wooden staircase leads to upper floors filled with rooms that exude the atmosphere of bygone centuries, complete with period details throughout the attic spaces.

The neighboring property carries its own unique history, having been the home of Michel and Marlène Lis. Michel Lis, who passed away in 2015, was a beloved radio personality known for his gardening expertise on France Inter radio station. The couple brought their botanical and creative touch to the vast Charentais residence at 6 Quai Palissy. Throughout the house and especially in the garden, the memory and influence of the famous radio gardener remain visible, creating a living tribute to his passion for plants and creative landscaping.

These two exceptional properties represent not only significant real estate opportunities but also important pieces of Saintes' cultural and architectural heritage. The sculptural house stands as a testament to 19th-century craftsmanship and artistic ambition, while the Lis residence embodies the creative spirit of a beloved local figure who touched many lives through his radio broadcasts and gardening expertise.
