Robert Koch Gallery Presents 'Narrative Implied' Exhibition Featuring Eleven Contemporary Photographers

Sayart / Aug 20, 2025

The Robert Koch Gallery is presenting "Narrative Implied," a compelling group exhibition that showcases the work of eleven distinguished artists whose photography explores various narrative concepts and storytelling approaches. The exhibition brings together photographers who utilize both clearly defined stories and more subtle, indirect narrative techniques to engage viewers in a dialogue about visual storytelling.

The featured artists in this comprehensive exhibition include Holly Andres, Trent Davis Bailey, Matt Black, Chris Dorley-Brown, Nadav Kander, Josef Koudelka, Mimi Plumb, Amy Stein, Alex Webb, Rebecca Norris Webb, and Michael Wolf. Each artist contributes a unique perspective on how photography can convey narrative through both what is revealed and what remains hidden from the viewer's eye.

The photographs in "Narrative Implied" are particularly notable for their dual nature of disclosure and concealment, creating a dynamic tension that invites interpretation. These works welcome viewers into a realm filled with mystery and uncertainty, where the boundaries between reality and imagination become blurred. The open-ended nature of these images encourages audiences to become active participants in constructing meaning and narrative from visual clues.

The exhibition presents an impressive range of visual approaches and methodologies. Some artists work within established documentary traditions, capturing spontaneous elements from their immediate surroundings and everyday environments. Others take a more constructed approach, developing intentionally staged or fabricated scenes that blur the line between reality and fiction. Additionally, some photographers work with appropriated imagery, recontextualizing existing visual materials to create new narrative possibilities.

All participating artists share a common interest in examining the emotional and psychological dimensions of narrative construction in photography. They particularly focus on exploring the dynamic relationship between what appears visible within the photographic frame and what exists beyond the image's boundaries, creating a sense of expanded storytelling that extends beyond the physical limits of the photograph.

"Narrative Implied" will be on display from August 4 through August 30, 2025, at the Robert Koch Gallery, located at 49 Geary Street, 5th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94108. The gallery can be reached at 415.421.0122, and additional information is available at www.kochgallery.com.
