Stuttgart-based photographer Thomas Rathay recently documented the traditional cattle drive in Oberried, offering a unique artistic perspective on this centuries-old rural practice. In an exclusive interview, Rathay shared his experiences capturing the intersection of tradition and nature through his lens, revealing insights into how modern photographers can preserve cultural heritage.
Rathay's journey began early in the morning when he joined the cattle drivers at 5:30 AM to ensure he would be in position to capture the entire event. Having previously witnessed a cattle drive in the Alps, he thought he knew what to expect, but the Oberried experience proved to be distinctly different. "I had been to a cattle drive in the Alps before and knew the principle, so I had a rough idea of what to expect. Nevertheless, it was completely different in Oberried," Rathay explained.
What struck the photographer most was the authenticity of the tradition in Oberried compared to his previous Alpine experience. "In Oberried, I had the impression that it was a truly lived tradition. In the Alps, the focus was sometimes more on tourism," he noted, highlighting how the Black Forest community maintains the practice as a genuine cultural expression rather than merely a tourist attraction.
The early morning departure with the cattle drivers allowed Rathay to witness the preparation and organization that goes into the traditional livestock movement. This behind-the-scenes access provided him with opportunities to capture not just the spectacle of the cattle drive itself, but the authentic moments of preparation and the dedication of the people who keep this tradition alive.
