The prestigious 34th Ravi Jain Memorial Exhibition and Awards is set to begin at Dhoomimal Gallery in Delhi, featuring a diverse collection of contemporary artworks including paintings, sculptures, video installations, and digital art. Out of more than 600 submissions from artists across India, only 60 have been selected to showcase their work at this renowned annual event.
Among the selected artists is 27-year-old Lipika Maity, who recently completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya in Khairagarh. Maity specializes in mixed media on canvas, drawing inspiration from the intricate forms of mycelium and fungi. For her, mushrooms serve as metaphors for thriving even in challenging conditions, reflecting resilience and growth.
"From an early age, art has been the language through which I have expressed my inner world," Maity explained. "The personal refuge, sought in the form of art, gradually evolved into a dedicated practice, shaping both my identity and my journey as an artist." Her artistic process involves experimenting with various textures, pigments, and materials to capture the natural beauty of fungi, with each piece developing organically to echo how nature builds silently and steadily.
Maity's work demonstrates a particular fascination with nature, seeking to highlight the delicate balance between the familiar and the unknown. Through her art, she conveys the hidden threads that connect life, emotion, and creativity. "Being shortlisted for this prestigious exhibition is very special for me," she said. "It feels like a gentle affirmation of my journey. It is both humbling and empowering, like seeing my inner emotions, struggles, and growth take root in a wider landscape of art."
The young artist views herself as a small yet growing voice within the vast dialogue of contemporary art in India, hoping to contribute more meaningful stories through her creative work. Her selection represents the exhibition's commitment to supporting emerging talent alongside established artists.
Uday Jain, director of Dhoomimal Gallery, emphasized the exhibition's mission to nurture young artistic talent. "The exhibition and the awards carry forward my father's vision of supporting young artists and providing them with a platform that recognizes skills, creativity, and potential," he stated. This year's selection includes artworks across various mediums, demonstrating the diversity and innovation present in contemporary Indian art.
The exhibition will feature works in multiple artistic disciplines, including traditional painting and printmaking as well as contemporary forms such as video installations and digital art. Four winners will be announced from among the 60 selected artists, recognizing excellence across different categories and mediums.
