A striking phoenix memorial sculpture has been installed in the walled garden of RSPB Saltholme nature reserve in Stockton, offering visitors a unique way to honor loved ones through personalized feather engravings. The impressive 5-foot-tall memorial provides an opportunity for people to purchase individual feathers that can be engraved with dedications to someone special in their lives.
The phoenix sculpture was crafted by artist Andrew McKeown using galvanized steel for the main structure and corten steel specifically for the flame elements at the base. The artwork stands as a powerful symbol in the nature reserve's walled garden, representing themes of renewal, remembrance, and hope for visitors seeking a meaningful way to commemorate loved ones.
Visitors can choose from three different feather sizes to suit their preferences and budget. Small feathers are priced at $200, medium feathers cost $250, and large feathers are available for $300. All proceeds from the feather sales will directly support the ongoing conservation efforts and wildlife protection work being conducted at RSPB Saltholme nature reserve.
Chris Francis, the nature reserve manager, expressed his enthusiasm about the new addition to the facility. "We're thrilled to unveil our stunning new Phoenix Sculpture, a powerful symbol of renewal, remembrance, and hope," Francis stated. "Rising proudly in the walled garden at RSPB Saltholme this beautiful piece invites reflection and a connection to the area's industrial past."
The memorial sculpture has already generated interest from the community, with eight feathers sold since its installation. The first batch of engraved feathers will be officially installed on the phoenix structure in October, marking the beginning of what organizers hope will be an ongoing tribute to community members and their loved ones. The sculpture not only serves as a memorial space but also helps fund crucial conservation work that protects local wildlife and natural habitats.
