A remarkable new architectural installation has been completed in Bellevue, Washington, where the New York-based design firm MARC FORNES / THEVERYMANY has unveiled PILOTI, an extraordinary ultra-thin aluminum rotunda that serves as a dramatic new entrance to the city's Downtown Park. The innovative structure, commissioned by the City of Bellevue, represents a stunning combination of architectural artistry and structural engineering that transforms the transition from urban environment to green space.

The impressive installation stands 7.2 meters tall and showcases remarkable construction complexity, being composed of exactly 6,665 unique aluminum parts that are meticulously connected using 180,900 individual rivets. The structure's design cleverly aggregates multiple umbrella-like forms into a single circular surface, which is elegantly supported by a ring of slender, stiletto-like columns that give the installation its distinctive appearance.

One of the most striking features of PILOTI is its ornamental detailing, where twisting capitals grow upward from each supporting column, seamlessly blending structural necessity with decorative beauty. This innovative design approach transforms the surrounding space into a flowing geometric environment. Along the structure's perimeter, carefully engineered cantilevered folds terminate in distinctive scalloped finials that serve a dual purpose, contributing both to the overall structural stability and echoing the ornamental characteristics found in historic marquees.

The installation features thousands of tiny perforations strategically placed throughout its surface, a design element that originated as a practical construction aid but has evolved into a sophisticated lighting feature. During daylight hours, these perforations create enchanting dappled light patterns that shift and dance across the ground below, while at night, the entire structure transforms into a luminous beacon that guides visitors into the park with its gentle, welcoming glow.

Functioning as what designers describe as a "civic living room" for the Bellevue community, PILOTI's expansive open canopy creates a versatile space capable of accommodating a wide range of activities and gatherings. The structure is designed to host everything from intimate casual encounters and moments of personal reflection to larger community celebrations, including weddings, birthday parties, and family reunions, all taking place beneath its soaring, airy geometric canopy that provides both shelter and inspiration for visitors to Downtown Park.
