His latest project features striking stylized explosions that appear three-dimensional but are actually constructed entirely from two-dimensional layers, showcasing an impressive mastery of digital compositing techniques.
The project began as a simple concept but quickly evolved into something more ambitious. According to Donald, he "got carried away" while working on what started as basic cel-style smoke puffs. These small, individual elements eventually became the building blocks for a much larger and more complex explosion effect that convincingly mimics three-dimensional depth and movement.
The technical process behind the visual effect required careful attention to detail and extensive use of After Effects' distortion tools. Donald explained that the mini sprites themselves involved significant warping to achieve the desired look. He utilized multiple distortion effects including Mesh Warp, Bulge, Transform, Twirl, and Liquify to distort the smoke elements and build up the distinctive cel-style aesthetic that gives the explosion its unique character.
The color and shading development process was equally complex, involving the strategic combination of several smaller smoke puffs into a cohesive whole.
