Laboratory for Visionary Architecture (LAVA), a German-Australian design studio, has been chosen to lead the development of the concept master plan and legacy designs for Expo 2030 Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. The World Expo 2030 is a planned large-scale international exhibition that will showcase innovation, culture, and global collaboration on a massive scale.

The winning concept was created by a comprehensive consortium that includes LAVA as the lead firm, along with landscape design consultancy Land, major events and expo advisor Christine Losecaat, expo design strategic advisor Samantha Cotterell, Buro Happold, 9 E, Redas, and Montana. This diverse team brings together expertise from multiple disciplines to create a cohesive vision for the exposition.

According to an official statement from LAVA, the Riyadh edition of the expo will be strategically located between King Salman International Airport and Riyadh City. The site has been designed with long-term sustainability in mind, with plans for the location to remain functional after the event concludes as a mixed-use precinct that will incorporate retail spaces, dining establishments, and community facilities.

Expo 2030 Riyadh has described the upcoming event as a celebration of breakthrough achievements in science, technology, and cultural understanding. In their official statement, organizers expressed pride in working with this global team of design specialists led by LAVA. They emphasized that the concept master plan reflects the spirit of technological and scientific innovation by interpreting the expo's theme of "Foresight" as a vision for a new way of living for both current and future generations.

The design approach incorporates sophisticated fractal geometries, which are repeating natural patterns, into the overall architectural framework to improve environmental performance and spatial efficiency. According to the studio, this innovative approach enhances airflow throughout the site, optimizes light distribution, and increases energy efficiency, while simultaneously enriching the visitor experience and creating more engaging spaces for attendees.

Chris Bosse, co-founder of LAVA, explained that the design philosophy is firmly grounded in nature-based principles. "The master plan exemplifies how nature and technology, environmental restoration and urban innovation can effectively coexist," Bosse stated. "Expo 2030 Riyadh is a prototype for future cities – linking the microcosm of nature with the global digital realm and creating a new urbanism."

The design draws inspiration from the elegant efficiency and brilliance found in natural systems, using cellular structures as the foundation to shape what will become a futuristic, human-centric city. The plan prioritizes enhanced walkability and connectivity throughout the site while ensuring adaptability for a seamless transformation into what organizers envision as a "global village" after the expo concludes. This forward-thinking approach demonstrates how temporary international exhibitions can leave lasting positive impacts on their host communities and serve as models for sustainable urban development.
