San Diego's most celebrated and criticized architectural projects of 2025 have been announced through the city's prestigious Orchids and Onions competition, now in its 49th year. Del Mar Heights School emerged as the standout winner, claiming the coveted Grand Orchid award for exceptional design excellence in this year's competition.

The annual Orchids and Onions competition has become a longstanding tradition in San Diego's architectural community, recognizing both outstanding achievements in design and notable failures that detract from the city's visual landscape. The competition serves as both celebration and critique, honoring architects and developers who contribute positively to the urban environment while also calling attention to projects that fall short of design standards.

Del Mar Heights School's Grand Orchid victory represents the highest honor in the competition, reserved for projects that demonstrate exceptional architectural merit and positive community impact. The winning project was captured in striking photography by Cristian Costea of Costea Photography, showcasing the design elements that impressed the competition judges.

This year's competition continues the nearly five-decade tradition of evaluating San Diego's evolving architectural landscape. The Orchids and Onions awards have historically played an important role in shaping public discourse about urban development and design quality throughout the region, influencing both professional architects and community stakeholders in their approach to future projects.
