A striking new mural has captured the attention of passersby on Jean-Jaurès Street, where artist Yann Le Berre has created a monumental fresco that now adorns the future Maison de l'Habitat (Housing Center). Completed last month after ten days of intensive on-site work, the large-scale artwork stretches from the building's main exterior wall to its interior patio, bringing vibrant color and artistic vision to the urban landscape.
The mural draws its inspiration from the natural beauty of the Brière region, reflecting the wetland area's distinctive landscapes, textures, and materials. Working alongside collaborator Sabrina Lucas, Le Berre spent considerable time exploring the territory before beginning his artistic interpretation. The resulting work serves as an abstract and poetic representation of an interactive map that will be featured inside the Housing Center once it opens.
"These are interpretations that highlight the soul and identity of the place," Le Berre explained, describing his creative process. Rather than attempting to reproduce reality with photographic precision, the fresco combines interwoven color blocks with forms that evoke an aerial view of the landscape. The artist designed the piece to invite viewers to feel rather than simply observe, encouraging reflection on our relationship with the environment and how we perceive and inhabit our territory.
This latest addition joins Saint-Nazaire's growing collection of large-scale public art murals, part of the city's ongoing initiative to integrate art into public spaces. Previous commissioned works have transformed locations throughout the city, including Rue de la Paix, Rue Pierre Mendès France, Avenue Léon Blum, and Rue des Halles, creating an outdoor gallery that enriches the urban experience for residents and visitors alike.
The future Maison de l'Habitat represents an ambitious municipal project designed to serve as a comprehensive resource center for all residents of the territory. The facility will welcome property owners, renters, prospective buyers, and project developers, providing a centralized location for various services related to sustainable housing, energy renovation, and real estate project support. The center's mission focuses on promoting accessible, innovative, and environmentally responsible housing solutions.
Scheduled to open in spring 2026, the Housing Center will consolidate multiple housing-related services under one roof, making it easier for residents to access information and professional guidance.
