Kennedy International Airport's upcoming Terminal 6 is set to become a cultural gateway to New York City, featuring iconic artwork and installations from four of the city's most prestigious institutions. The $4.2 billion terminal will showcase curated pieces from the American Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, creating what officials are calling a "museum row" experience for arriving passengers.
The ambitious cultural collaboration aims to provide travelers with an immersive introduction to New York's vibrant arts scene before they even leave the airport. The Metropolitan Museum of Art plans to showcase 5,000 years of artistic heritage through their terminal installation. Visitors will encounter photographs of the famous "Unicorn Tapestry" from The Cloisters, along with a Dior bar suit from the museum's renowned Costume Institute. These carefully selected pieces will represent the breadth and depth of The Met's extensive collection, offering travelers a taste of the world-class art waiting in the city.
MoMA's contribution will feature a collaboration with renowned artist Yoko Ono, drawing inspiration from her powerful "PEACE is POWER" work. The installation is designed to "invite travelers to engage with the depth and urgency of her voice," creating an interactive and thought-provoking experience that reflects MoMA's commitment to contemporary and modern artistic expression.
Lincoln Center is planning to create a spectacular 140-foot mural that will celebrate the performing arts. The massive artwork will feature musical artists, theater performances, dance, and opera set against the backdrop of New York City streets and the distinctive architecture of Lincoln Center's venues. According to the press release, "The piece offers international travelers a striking first impression: a celebration of the city as a global stage where culture, creativity, and community converge."
The American Museum of Natural History will bring science and natural wonders to the terminal through images of their most iconic exhibits. Travelers will see the famous Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, the mysterious Rapa Nui figure from Easter Island, and components from the North America Mammals hall. This installation will highlight the museum's scientific collection and educational mission, appealing to visitors of all ages.
Beyond these major institutional partnerships, Terminal 6 will also feature artwork from local Queens artists, adding a community dimension to the cultural experience. The Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning will select six rotating Queens artists to showcase their work, while the Public Art Fund will contribute 19 permanent pieces. Additionally, the terminal will display sculptures created by New York artists, ensuring that local talent is well-represented alongside the world-famous institutions.
Rick Cotton, Executive Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, emphasized the unique nature of this cultural initiative. "Terminal 6 will offer arriving visitors from around the world a unique New York experience before they leave the terminal," he said, highlighting how the project will serve as an immediate introduction to the city's cultural richness.
The new terminal represents a significant upgrade in both size and amenities for JFK Airport. When completed, Terminal 6 will feature 10 larger gates, providing more space and comfort for passengers. The facility will include an extended drop-off area to ease traffic congestion, multiple airport lounges for premium travelers, and state-of-the-art TSA technology to streamline security processes. Advanced baggage systems will also be installed to improve efficiency and reduce wait times.
Construction of Terminal 6 began in 2023 as part of the Port Authority's massive $20 billion airport expansion project announced in 2017. This comprehensive plan includes expanding two existing terminals and creating two entirely new ones to modernize JFK and increase its capacity. The terminal will serve as home base for both domestic and international airlines, including major carriers such as JetBlue and Lufthansa.
The terminal opening will occur in phases to ensure smooth operations and minimize disruption. The first phase, featuring six gates along with the cultural installations, is scheduled to open in 2026. The remaining four gates will come online by 2028, completing the full terminal complex. This phased approach allows airlines to gradually transition their operations while passengers can begin enjoying the enhanced facilities and cultural experiences. Millennium Partners has been tasked with both building and operating the new terminal, overseeing this major infrastructure and cultural project from conception to completion.
