SHINee's Minho Returns to Theater Stage After Premature End to Debut Performance

SHINee member Choi Minho is making his return to the theater stage, taking on the same role that marked his theatrical debut over a year ago. The K-pop idol will reprise his role as Val in "Waiting for Waiting for Godot," which is set to open on September 16 in Seoul's vibrant theater district of Daehangno.

The production serves as a creative tribute to Samuel Beckett's renowned absurdist masterpiece "Waiting for Godot." Written by American playwright Dave Hanson, this comedic work focuses on two forgotten understudies named Esther and Val who become stuck backstage, perpetually waiting for their opportunity to finally take the stage and perform.

Minho's first theatrical experience ended unexpectedly last year when the Korean premiere was forced to close early. His stage partner, veteran actor Lee Soon-jae, who played the role of Esther, had to withdraw from the production due to health complications, leaving the show unable to continue.

During a press conference held on Tuesday, Minho reflected on the personal connection he feels to his character. "This was my very first play, and the role felt destined for me," he explained. "When I first began rehearsals last year, I thought, 'This character is in exactly the same situation I'm in.' His longing to be on stage is exactly what I feel."

The performer acknowledged the disappointment he experienced when the production ended abruptly, but he plans to use those feelings to enhance his upcoming performance. "This play carries messages of encouragement and resilience. That's what I want to deliver to the audience," Minho stated.

The rehearsal process has brought back vivid memories of his early days as a trainee in the entertainment industry. "Back then, all I wished for was to stand on stage and be recognized," he shared. "That innocent desire of my younger self came back to me through this role. It reminded me why I wanted to perform in the first place."

For this new production run, Minho will share the role of Val with accomplished actor Lee Sang-yun, as the two performers will alternate in the part. Meanwhile, two veteran actors, Park Geun-hyung and Kim Byung-chul, will take turns playing the role of Esther, replacing Lee Soon-jae from the previous production.

"Waiting for Waiting for Godot" will have an extended run, continuing through November 16, giving audiences ample opportunity to see this unique theatrical interpretation. The production promises to blend the existential themes of Beckett's original work with fresh comedic elements that explore the dreams and struggles of performers waiting for their moment to shine.
